Dr. Kevin Hearle is a fifth-generation Californian, a distinguished poet, and the winner of the international Burkhardt Award as the Outstanding Steinbeck Scholar of 2005.

Although he formerly served terms as President, Treasurer, and Secretary of the Board of Directors of City Arts of San Mateo, this is Dr. Hearle's first run for political office.

Born March 17, 1958 in Santa Ana, California, he is the second of the three sons of H. David and L. Patricia Hearle. Both of his parents were public elementary school teachers, and through them he learned the importance of education and of public service. His father was president of the Santa Ana Educators' Association, and each of his parents served multiple terms as president of the Pacific Coast Archaeological Society.

After receiving his A.B. in English with Distinction from Stanford University, Kevin Hearle went on to earn his M.F.A. in English from the University of Iowa, and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Literature from the University of California at Santa Cruz.

Poems from his Each Thing We Know Is Changed Because We Know It, and Other Poems have been included in, among other anthologies: California Poetry: from the Gold Rush to the Present, Unfolding Beauty: Celebrating California's Landscapes, and The Poetry Cure. He was the revision editor for the current critical edition of The Grapes of Wrath: Text and Criticism, the co-editor of Beyond Boundaries: Rereading John Steinbeck, and has been a founding member of the editorial boards of The Steinbeck Review, Steinbeck Studies, and The Steinbeck Newsletter.

Dr. Hearle has, at various times, served as a guest lecturer at Stanford University, Notre Dame de Namur University, the National Steinbeck Center in Salinas, the University of Findlay, and Ohio State University-Lima, and he has been an adjunct faculty member at the University of Iowa, Coe College, the University of California at Santa Cruz, San Jose State University, California State University at Los Angeles, UCLA Extension, UC Santa Cruz Extension, College of Notre Dame, Santa Clara University, and Notre Dame de Namur University.

Hearle serves as master of ceremonies for the Central Park Music Series on Thursday nights in the summer in San Mateo.
